When someone wishes to learn and speak a different language, it is normal to focus on gramatic topics and things like that, and that is not even wrong, but what one should know is that to have a conversation with someone in any idiom it is necessary to know how to begin it. That is why today we are going to teach you some ways to begin a conversation in Portuguese.
As in any language, there formal and informal ways to start a talk in Portuguese, so we are going to cite here the two.
The most common and informal way is “Oi!”, which means “Hi!”. Then we have the most common formal way, which is “Olá!”, and which means “Hello!”. It is normal that following the “Oi!” or “Olá!”, there is other expression to complement them, which is “Tudo bem?”; it means “How are you?”. In the end, they would stay like this: “Oi, tudo bem?” or “Olá, tudo bem?”, as one only expression, both meaning “Hi, how are you?” and “Hello, how are you?” respectivelly.
If someone wishes to be formal in Portuguese, and that is even advisable, because there are many people who do it – so it is important not only for one can use formality, but also for someone can understand it -, there are some other ways to greet and start a conversation in Portuguese, too. They are “Bom dia!”, “Boa tarde!” and “Boa noite!”, which mean “Good morning!”, “Good afternoon!” and “Good night!” respectivelly, and each is used for a part of the day; just that “Bom dia!” can be used both during the morning and the afternoon.
So what about practising some Portuguese, now that you already know how to begin a conversation?!
