It was mentioned on our post about how to begin a conversation in Portuguese (click on the link to read it, if you have not seen it yet), that it is important to know how to do it, when one wishes to speak a language, in this case the Portuguese one, but it is also true that when someone starts a talk, that person will need to know how to finish it as well. So today you are going to learn how to say bye in Portuguese here!
As well as to begin a conversation there are both formal and informal ways, so are there to finish it. The most common and informal is “Tchau!”, which means “Bye!”, and it is pronounced alike “Ciao!” in English (or Italian). There is also “Até logo!”, it is other informal way and it means “See you soon!”.
If someone is supposed to be absent for a long time, or not even to come back anymore, so it is used “Adeus!”, which means “Farewell!”. However, if someone wishes to be formal, he may use “Bom dia!” or “Boa noite!”, both meaning “Good day!” and “Good night!” respectivelly. These two last are usually used when someone begins a conversation, but they may be used for ending it, too.
