How to say “I miss you” in Portuguese?

Hello, and welcome to Your Portuguese! Today, we are going to learn other very important thing in the Portuguese language, mainly if you have a beloved person who is a Portuguese native speaker, or not.

Sometimes, we know people, and we have many good moments with them, but for some motive, we have to be far from them, then we feel the absence of them, and because of that, usually we feel the wish to express to those people how we miss them. For that, in English, we say: “I miss you”. But how could you say that in Portuguese? Let’ s see it below.

If you translate the sentence English “ I miss you” literally into Portuguese, it will not make sense. Not that a person would not understand it, but it would be unuseful, and you could have some problem to express yourself. In Portuguese, that is not expressed specially with a verb, yet with a substantive, and it is: “Saudade”, or “saudades”. See the example:

E.g.: Fernanda, eu estou com muita saudade de você.

On that sentence, the person literally tells Fernanda that he “is with much ‘saudade’ of her”. Saudade then would mean something like longing. Still it practically means in English: “Fernanda, I miss you”. So the basic formula to tell you miss someone, or something in Portuguese is: “Estou com saudade (s) de”.

Is there other way to do it? Yes, for sure! Although the one we have already explained is the most used, there is still other mean that may be used , and it is: “Sinto a falta de…”, or in the specific case of a person, “Sinto a sua falta”. This would be the most alike Portuguese version of the English “ I miss you”, since it would literally be translated as: “I feel your absence”.

Anyway, now you know the two main ways of how to say you miss someone or something in Portuguese. So if you fit to the case we have cited in the beginning of this article, go right away after your beloved one and tell him/her how you miss him/her!
