Many people know what an idiom is (do you?), but it does not mean that everyone does, for that, we will have it explained here. Idioms are expressions that have a different meaning from that they would have, if they were read literally or word by word. Like that, idioms cannot be interpreted by its elements in a sentence, but by its context.
Since the concept of idiom is clarified, what about learning a Portuguese one?!
Our idiom of today is “por mãos à obra”. Do you know what it means? Literally, por mãos à obra would mean something like “to put hands on the building”, yet as it is already known, an idiom cannot be translated directly, so por mãos à obra means to begin something. An example of it would be: “Há muito tempo, quis estudar uma língua nova, acho que agora é hora de por mãos à obra!”; what means: “It has been a long time I have wished to learn a new language, I guess it is time to go for it!
So what about por mãos à obra and begin to study Portuguese?!
